Tips for Breast Health.

October 5th, 2011

It is officially Breast Cancer Awareness month and Same Sky would like to share some pointers for keeping your ‘ladies’ in tip-top shape.

Exercise: According to the National Cancer Institute, working out 4 or more hours weekly can reduce the risk of breast cancer in premenopausal women.  Staying active can regulate hormone levels and help in maintaining a healthy weight – all crucial to breast health.

Limit alcohol consumption: Alcohol increases breast cancer risks.  The Mayo Clinic highly encourages limiting drinks to 1 per day to minimize the risk.

Breast Self-Exam: It is recommended to perform a self-examination at least once a month.  This is a great method of early detection.  Remember, once a month will help you become familiar with your body and more easily detected any changes.  Here is a great site to show you how.

Don’t forget to spread the word.  Remind your friends to do their monthly self–exam.

I just saw a feature on "Inside Edition" TV show regarding the Same Sky initiative for Rwandan genocide survivors.  As a retiree, I couldn't afford  a glass bead bracelet, but purchased a fabric wrap.  I'll wear it with pride and spread the word about this worthwhile enterprise.  How wonderful to see these survivors supporting themselves and improving their lives.  I hope they see each sale as a vote of confidence from those of us who have been more fortunate.  I wish them peace of mind, success and every happiness.
