President in Zambia

January 5th, 2012

Former Pres. Bush with Abataka's Jessica Grillo.

Former President George W. Bush visited Zambia at the beginning of December to raise health awareness of breast and cervical cancer, as well as HIV.

Accompanied by his wife Laura and his two daughters, they traveled to Tanzania and Ethiopia, as well, to assert the U.S.’s commitment to raising health standards in those countries.

During Mr. Bush’s time in Lusaka he met Jessica Grillo of The Abataka Collective of Mary Fisher Productions, which produces Same Sky and Mary Fisher products. The artisans of Abataka are HIV positive women who are trained in beadwork that supports them and their families.  Among them are three cancer survivors.

In Zambia, it is estimated that 1 in 7 adults are HIV positive and it is so important to Same Sky to have a presence there.

Mr. Bush sent a “blessing to us in Zambia and specifically to our artisans who are healthy and strong,” said Grillo.  We applaud former President Bush’s initiative in raising awareness of the health, especially the HIV, issues that exist in Zambia.

I just saw a feature on "Inside Edition" TV show regarding the Same Sky initiative for Rwandan genocide survivors.  As a retiree, I couldn't afford  a glass bead bracelet, but purchased a fabric wrap.  I'll wear it with pride and spread the word about this worthwhile enterprise.  How wonderful to see these survivors supporting themselves and improving their lives.  I hope they see each sale as a vote of confidence from those of us who have been more fortunate.  I wish them peace of mind, success and every happiness.

Dear Asante – it is because of women like you that the world is so wonderful. I am proud to wear my bracelet. I actually got rid of my Pandora bracelet and took my two Pandora charms and wear them on my Same Sky black bracelet. It is actually quite fashionable and I talk about SameSky all of the time. It is nightime here and as I look up at the stars there you are – under the same sky. Please keep up the good hard work. The children of this world need you.

Ladies ..I gave my mom one of the glass bracelets for Mothers day and told her the story behind it, like how they are made where they are made and why. Im just sayin ...she cried and it was a special moment between mom and daughter. She told me she is going to wear it often and hopes many will ask her about it so she can pass on the story :)

These Rwanadan women who have survived AIDS and the genocide, are making the most beautiful glass bead bracelets and they get the proceeds, for the firat time in their lives thaty have food and shelter and the necessities of life. We all NEED to order a bracelet, NO, they are not cheap but consider it charity! You will feel good about it and have a beautiful bracelet to show for it.
